WHAT IS THE ANNUAL CONVENTION?
The NAPABA Annual Convention, which takes place in a different host city each year, is an annual meeting in which hundreds of Asian Pacific American attorneys, judges, law professors, and law students converge. The 2013 Convention will take place on November 7-10. To celebrate the Convention’s 25th anniversary, for the first time in the Convention’s history, it will be held in Kansas City, Missouri. We expect to attract over 1500 APA attorneys (from private practice, corporations, government, and public interest), including general counsel of Fortune 1000 companies, federal and state judges, and law professors from across the country.
To learn more about NAPABA and this year’s Convention in Kansas City, we encourage you to watch this video.
We need your help to make this the most successful NAPABA Convention yet. We are seeking attorneys of all backgrounds with any type of skills they may have. Help us keep the momentum going!
This year’s conference will once again host the Thomas Tang Moot Court Competition. The Tang Competition is an annual appellate advocacy competition that was founded in 1993 to honor the late Judge Thomas Tang of the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, a champion of individual rights and an advocate for the advancement of minority attorneys. We are looking for NAPABA members to take time out of their day to judge a one of the rounds and offer valuable guidance to young law students. The rounds are as follows:
Friday, November 8
9:15 am to 10:15 am – 8 Preliminary rounds (Marriott)
10:30 am to 11:30 am – 8 Preliminary rounds (Marriott)
2:00 pm to 3:00 pm – Quarterfinal rounds (Marriott)
Saturday, November 9, 2013
10:00 am to 11:00 am – Semifinal rounds (Marriott)
If you are interested please fill out this form. For more information, please do not hesitate to contact Richard Juang by email at email@example.com or by phone at 314.622.6621 or Susan Ikazaki by email at firstname.lastname@example.org or by phone 816.881.3692.
LAW STUDENT VOLUNTEERS
We are accepting applications for law students to volunteer at the 2013 NAPABA Convention. The deadline to apply is Friday, September 20, 2013. Priority may be given to those who apply early. Please note that filling out the application form does NOT guarantee a spot on the volunteer team.
Volunteers will assist with registration, set-up, break-out panels, checking in attendees for CLE credit, receptions, VIPs and hosting the Saturday evening gala dinner, among other activities.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF VOLUNTEERING?
Volunteering will grant you complimentary general admission registration to attend the Convention and provide you the opportunity to work closely with practicing attorneys and other law students from the Kansas City area and across the country. You can polish your networking skills, make new friends, expand your contacts, and informally seek valuable mentoring and career advice.
Confirmed volunteers will be given a promotion code to input into the online Convention registration form to waive the registration fee. In order to receive the registration waiver code, volunteers must first provide credit card information to the Volunteer Committee as volunteers who do not serve at least eight volunteer hours at the Convention will be charged the registration fee (at the $150 discounted member rate for law students).
WHAT IS THE TIME COMMITMENT TO VOLUNTEER AT THE CONVENTION?
Volunteers will work at least eight hours (one eight-hour shift or two four-hour shifts) over the Convention weekend in addition to attending a brief volunteer orientation prior to the Convention weekend. We will need volunteers at various times during the entire weekend of the Convention (November 7-10). For those of you who are or will be in the Kansas City area immediately prior to the official start of the Convention, we may also need volunteer assistance on November 5-6.
HOW TO VOLUNTEER
Complete the volunteer application form by Friday, September 20, 2013. Selections of volunteers will be made by the Volunteers Committee Co-Chairs and formally confirmed by email to each volunteer as soon as possible after the September 20th deadline.
